Book Kristen Her StoryAfter losing her mother to suicide in 6th grade, Kristen spent years struggling with mental illness, substance use disorder, and self-harm. Now more than 10+ years sober, she has proudly served as a Young Adult Speaker with Minding Your Mind since 2016, completing 700+ presentations across schools and communities nationwide. As an independent speaker, she brings that same authentic storytelling to corporate wellness programs, athletic departments, and conferences.
Read Her Full StoryI joined late, but in 15 minutes I saw myself and my childhood. I’m a 45-year-old sitting at my desk in tears. You opened a crack in a very thick wall.
Trevor, Audience Member — MYM PresentationIn my 17 years here, I have never seen students so engaged in a presentation. Kristen was both dynamic and relatable. Following both presentations, 15–20 students stayed after just to say thank you. I was incredibly impressed by her vulnerability and her overall energy.
Casey, Abington School District — MYM PresentationOur 7th-grade class is a relatively difficult class to work with, but you could hear a pin drop. They were listening to every word. The principal hasn’t stopped talking about how wonderful she was.
Jamie, Middle School Educator — MYM PresentationKristen Harootunian's childhood was marked by significant trauma. When she was in 6th grade, her mother — who had struggled with addiction — attempted and completed suicide. Left to navigate her grief alone, Kristen buried her pain and built walls around herself.
As she grew older, she turned to alcohol, drugs, and self-harm to cope. At one point, she believed she wouldn't live past 18. Through numerous treatment efforts, she finally accepted help — attending long-term residential treatment and then a recovery high school to finish her education.
Kristen went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communications from Penn State University — and was honored to deliver the commencement address at her own graduation.
Since 2016, Kristen has proudly served as a Young Adult Speaker with Minding Your Mind, a nonprofit dedicated to mental health education, completing 700+ presentations that have reached over 100,000 individuals across schools, colleges, and communities nationwide.
